The PhD program usually requires four to six years of work, with an average of roughly five years. The student and the faculty in his/her area determine the specific program of study in accordance with each student's goals and interests. Each student is required to gain expertise in an area of special interest via coursework or independent study and to take a comprehensive exam in this area, usually during the second or third year of residence. The final requirement is the presentation of a dissertation. The PhD program offers programs of research and training in the areas of accounting, decision sciences, finance, marketing, management, operations management, and strategy.

Fuqua School of Business policy is to provide stipends, tuition and registration, and health fees for all new PhD students. The school provides tuition, registration, and health fees throughout the program and provides stipend support for ten semesters, as long as the student continues to make satisfactory progress toward the PhD.

PhD Program Facts for Duke University's Fuqua School of Business 2008-2009

• There are 80 students in the program (8 in accounting, 11 in decision sciences, 18 in finance, 10 in management, 18 in marketing, 10 in operations management, 5 in strategy).

• For the past three years, acceptance rates have ranged from 7 - 10% (based on 423-457 applicants). Average GMAT scores of accepted applicants have ranged from approximately 705 to 726 (the overall range of scores for accepted applicants was 520 to 800); average undergraduate GPAs have ranged from 3.5-3.7, average graduate GPAs have ranged from 3.6-3.9.

Financial Aid

 Full tuition grant, registration, and mandatory student health fees while in residence for the program; stipend of $24,000 for the first year and $21,000 for years two through five (as part of their doctoral training and educational experience, students would work as research and teaching assistants for an average of 10 hours per week in year one and 6 hours per week in years two through five; additional research assistantship funds of approximately $3000 per year (roughly four hours per week) are also available beyond the first year). Health insurance is covered for the first six years for students who elect the Duke health insurance plan. This package is given to all those admitted.

Tests

Either the GRE or GMAT is an acceptable test for applicants to take.

Program Structure

The program usually requires 4-6 years of work. Most students take roughly two years of coursework. The particular courses taken are individualized for each student, in consultation with the faculty in his/her area, based upon the student's background, goals, and interests. Courses are selected from those available at the Fuqua School, other departments at Duke, the University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State. Students are also required to pass a major field requirement (exam or major paper, depending upon the area), usually in the third year of residence, and to propose, carry out, and defend a dissertation.
