2009 Alumni Award Winners

The Fuqua School of Business recognizes alumni contributions through two awards, the Alumni Impact Award and the Distinguished Service Award.

2009 Alumni Impact Award

Matthew Bailey, Daytime MBA '99

"In addition to the sheer number of hours he has dedicated to promoting our school, Matt's leadership behind the scenes has helped strengthen Fuqua for future generations," wrote Assistant Dean Elizabeth Hogan in her nomination of Matt. As former Chair of Fuqua's Alumni Council, Matt brought a consultant's discipline to the group's supporting infrastructure and was instrumental in developing the vision, mission, and strategic plan for the Council. Matt has made personal calls to prospective students that Fuqua wanted to recruit as Keller Scholars, drafted letters for admitted student welcome packets, and traveled to campus to captivate prospects and new students with keynote speeches at Blue Devil Weekend and Orientation. He has served as counsel for Fuqua's brand task force, and assisted Fuqua's senior development team by making connections to key individuals and providing context that would help Fuqua engage prospective donors.

The Alumni Impact Award was established in 2001 to recognize and honor individuals or teams who have bettered the school by investing their time and energy on a specific project. Award recipients' commitment to Fuqua is demonstrated by their willingness to work out unique solutions to create positive outcomes, and to take initiative to benefit the Fuqua community with their time, energy, and talents.

2009 Award for Exemplary Service

Keith Artin, Daytime MBA '99

Keith has been an invaluable supporter of Fuqua's Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship (CASE). He returns to Fuqua often to speak to current students, inspiring them, "to think more seriously about how they can use their MBA to create social change," wrote Ruth Tolman, Assistant Director for CASE, in her nomination. Keith, who is COO of Triangle Residential Options for Substance Abusers (TROSA), hosts first-year Daytime students for tours of TROSA at every Day in Durham event, and has supervised several independent study teams and Fuqua on Board participants. "Keith has added materially to the experiential learning component of the Fuqua education," said Ruth. "He is always ready to help whenever we ask (and that is often!)."

Edward Magee, Daytime MBA '04

Ed has been an active partner with Fuqua since the minute he walked onto campus. Ed served as President of the MBAA while he was a student, and after graduation, he channeled that same passion for Fuqua by serving on Fuqua's Alumni Council for five years. Ed also has been a leader in his class Reunion Committee and supported Fuqua's fundraising efforts as an Annual Fund volunteer. He constantly encourages his classmates to stay connected with the school through in-person events and online social media. Ed also has helped build a strong relationship between his employer, Harley Davidson, and Fuqua. "Ed's dedication to Fuqua and hard work have resulted in a custom executive education program with Duke Corporate Education and increased participation in our non-degree Advanced Management Program," wrote Director of Executive Education Kip Kelly. "Ed is helping to bring the many valuable resources available here at Fuqua to his employer, and doing so with class."

The Award for Exemplary Service was established in 1991 to recognize individuals who demonstrate their dedication to Fuqua by donating their time, energy, talents, or financial support and who build networks through class activities, regional programs, and initiatives within their corporation, and service to current students and faculty. Award recipients have led by example in showing others how to strengthen the bonds between the school and its alumni and corporate partners.
